Dec  France
The Greens (LV) and Europe Écologie (EE), a progressive coalition of regionalist parties and anti-globalisation activists created for the 2009 EP elections, were reorganised into the new party Europe Écologie - The Greens (EELV).

Nov  Poland
Dissident members of the national conservative party Law and Justice (PiS) that were dissatisfied with the direction and the leadership of Jarosław Kaczyński set up a moderate conservative grouping called Poland is Most Important / Polska jest Najważniejsza (PjN). 15 MPs and 4 MEPs joined the new organisation.

Oct  European Union
The Party of the European Left (EL) welcomed the Bulgarian Left (BL) and the Unitarian Left (GU) / France as a new members and the United Cyprus Party (BKP) as an observer party. The Party of European Socialists (PES) accepted the membership application of the Democratic Party of Moldova (DPM), the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR) from the Liberal Party (PL) / Moldova and from Freedom and Solidarity (SAS) / Slovakia.

Aug  Italy
Gianfranco Fini (PDL), President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and vocal critic of Silvio Berlusconi and his leadership style of the country, announced the formation of a separate parliamentary group under the name Future and Freedom for Italy / Futuro e Libertà per l'Italia (FLI). 34 PDL deputies joined the group. Fini and Berlusconi had created the PDL in 2009 in order to unite the centre-right.

Jun  Greece
Four deputies from the rightist “renewal tendency” of Synaspismos (SYN), the largest group within the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), set up a new democratic socialist party called Democratic Left / Dimokratiki Aristera (DA).

   European Union
The Party of the European Left (EL) enlarged its membership and changed the status of one member: Unity List - The Red-Greens (EL) / Denmark (upgrade from observer to full member), Left Party (PG) / France (full member; the party was founded in 2008 by a leftist current of the PS led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon).

   European Union
The right-leaning Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR) from Luxembourg joined the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists (AECR), a trans- national Europarty led by the British Conservatives and the Polish PiS.

May  Estonia
The merger proposal with the Social Democratic Party (SDE) was voted down by the party congress of the People’s Union of Estonia (ERL). The former chairman and several leading board members left the party and joined the SDE.

Apr  Estonia
The leaders from the Social Democratic Party (SDE) and the agrarian People's Union of Estonia (ERL), Jüri Pihl and Karel Rüütli, signed a merger agreement.

Mar  Latvia
People's Harmony Party (TSP), New Center (JC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), all members of the five party alliance Harmony Centre (SC), established the Social Democratic Party 'Harmony' (SDPS). The local Daugavpils City Party (DPP), 4th member, also declared to merge into the party.

   Aosta Valley / I
Two regionalist parties and the local branch of the Federation of the Greens (VERDI) in the region Aosta Valley, in particular Lively Aosta Valley (AV), Valdotanian Renewal (RV) and Alternative Green Movement (MVA), founded a new center-left party called Autonomy, Liberty, Participation, Ecology (ALPE). The former senator Carlo Perrin was elected to the first coordinator.

Feb  Moldova
A considerable number of local branches of the extraparliamentary Social Democratic Party (PSD) announced that they were leaving to join the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM). The defectors claim to represent 11,000 members, which is about 2/3 of the total number of branches. The PDM, lead by the PRCM defector Marian Lupu, announced that it seeks to consolidate the center-left.

Jan  European Union
The Party of European Socialists (PES) enlarged its membership and changed the status of some members: PS/Albania, DPS/Montenegro, SDP/Montenegro (full member parties); CTP/Northern Cyprus (observer); SDP/Bosnia and Herzegovina, S/Iceland, DS/Serbia (upgrade from observer parties to associate members). The suspension of SMER-SD/Slovakia was lifted.

   Belgium
The Social Liberal Party (SLP) decided to merge into the Greens (GROEN).

     Austria
The Carinthian branch of the Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ), The Freedomites in Carinthia (FPK), joined forces with the FPÖ. Federal BZÖ chief Josef Bucher’s announced plans to position the party as a "liberal, economy-orientated force" are regarded as one of the reasons for the move.
