Francesco Rutelli,
former mayor of Rome, left the social democratic Democratic Party
(PD)
and launched a small centrist party called Alliance for Italy (API). Rutelli
and his followers opposed the election of Pier Luigi Bersani as
PD party leader. The coalition Left and Freedom (SEL) was
reorganised into a moderate socialist party called Left Ecology Freedom (SEL).
Nichi Vendola, president of the Apulia region, was elected as spokesperson
of the party. The new formation consists of the Movement for the Left (MPS)
[PRC faction], Democratic Left (SD) [DS faction], Unite the Left (UIS)
[PDCI faction] and the Ecologists [VERDI faction]. The former
coalition members Italian Socialist Party (PSI) and Greens (VERDI)
retained their autonomy. The Communist Refoundation Party (PRC), the
Party of Italian Communists (PDCI) and the small organisations
Socialism 2000 and Labour-Solidarity founded the
communist and anti-capitalist Federation of the Left (FDS).
